While at a government office that shall not be named, I handed over my Driver’s License and asked for paperwork that I was told would be ready for pickup. I always hand over my license when I’m asking someone to look me up by my last name. It usually prevents being asked repeatedly how I spell my name. Not this time. With my license in her hand, the employee loudly complained for everyone in the room to hear.
“Why are there so many letters in her name?”
< - tears up nametag she was making and tries again ->
“Her name doesn’t fit.”
< - tears up nametag and tries again ->
“HOW DO YOU SPELL YOUR LAST NAME?”
You would think I deliberately spell my name difficultly for the sole purpose of causing others grief. I say nothing when it is perpetually mispronounced, but there’s not much I can do for people who can’t copy it off my license.
