  1. 24 hours?! Try 16.5 years.

If as the adult, we pick them up and stop there, we are not being adults but instead being enablers. As the adult, we can pick up their trash, or do their chores for them but there has to be a cost to the child to help them acknowledge the consequence.
To child: “Do the dishes.” Child: “No.”
Perhaps this is not a battle worth fighting so the adult does the dishes. Later the child asks: “Can I go to the mall?” Adult: “No. The time I alloted to drive you to the mall was spent doing the dishes for you.”
