music that makes me think of my parents. . .

Hearing The Fifth Dimension, Roberta Flack, Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond, The Bee Gees, Elvis, Doris Day, Jan & Dean, Bobby Sherman, Donovan, Tony Orlando and Tom Jones take me to another place in time with my mother. Usually in the car.

I drift back somewhere with my father whenever I hear The Statler Brothers, Johnny Cash, Sha Na Na, Buddy Holly, the Kingston Trio and any gimmicky tune from the 50s or 60s. Again, in the car. My parents kept the radio playing whenever we were in the car, but rarely at home. On long road trips, my father sang to keep himself awake while he drove. There is no other explanation for why I know all the words to so many Statler Brothers songs.
